November 6, 2009: Smith Comments on Rising Unemployment Print

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today issued the following comments after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the U.S. economy lost 190,000 jobs in October, raising the unemployment rate to 10.2 percent - a 26-year high.

"Today's numbers are a sobering assessment of the state of our economy. Instead of pushing through government-run health care, Congress needs to develop solutions to put Americans back to work.

"The Democrat-backed health care legislation will cause small businesses to delay filling and creating jobs as they contemplate the impact these tax increases will have - leading to even higher job losses.  This is the wrong path for Congress to take.  We need to strengthen small businesses to enable them to hire more workers and get our economy back on track," Smith said.
